Why is it called . . . The Pope Place?

The Pope Place was purchased from the estate of Mary Pope who married Ralph Pope shortly after World War II.  Ralph Pope volunteered to serve in WWII at the age of 17.  Shortly after being sent to the Pacific theater he was captured and held prisoner of war for 4 years by the Japanese through the end of the war.  During that time he proved himself on countless occasions to be a true American hero.  After Ralph returned home from his torturous experience he met Mary Harrison who was working at the Pentagon.  They were married and soon thereafter built their life together in Edgerton, WI, at what is now called The Pope Place.  Ralph's personal recollection of his trials and tribulations while prisoner was documented in a diary, portions of which we have available for you to read. The name The Pope Place serves as a lasting tribute to these special people.

Having spent nearly 20 years on Rice Lake, we have experienced the magnificent solitude and grace that our lake is capable of providing.  We feel that The Pope Place will afford anyone who is willing to embark on a journey into the privacy of nature a unique opportunity of self exploration.

As avid cyclists, we have created detailed maps for 25, 50, 75 & 100 mile routes for your cycling pleasure inclusive of ice cream locations.  May you enjoy the gently sometimes challenging rolling hills, the essence and serenity of country living, and the wind at your back.

Our hope is that you can leave behind your fast paced stress of life and enter the unhurried rhythm of nature at Rice Lake.

We look forward to your stay at The Pope Place!
